Each Hero has a numeric value for Endurance. This defines the maximum amount of Strain that can be assigned to them. If an effect assigns Strain to a hero in excess of their Endurance, each extra Strain is converted to Damage.

When a Hero rests, they remove an amount of Strain equal to their Endurance. If their Endurance value is higher than the amount of Strain assigned to them, they use the excess to remove Damage.
